New products

I love experimenting with new products to make, and I also REALLY love coffee! You can’t beat the smell of fresh ground coffee in my book. So, I have decided to explore making my own hand-carved coffee scoop. I’m quite excited to get going on this.

Research

The first thing is to figure out the rough size of scoop needed. According to various sources, the aim for a standard measure of ground coffee is 2 tablespoons, which is about 30 ml, or 10-15 grams.

So, here I rack my dusty brains for the equation to calculate the volume of a sphere from decades ago at school (Ok, that’s too far in the past, I couldn’t remember, so I googled it). V = 4/3 π r³

If my scoop is roughly a hemi-sphere, then I need the radius to be just over 2.4cm. I’m planning on working to this, and once roughed out, I will measure one of my scoops of ground coffee and weigh it to see where I’m at. From holding a teaspoon, I’m going to aim for the handle being 10-12cm long. I will wing it for that being something with a comfortable curve.

I’m going to be using a hardwood that is food safe. My go to choices for such projects are usually maple, cherry or walnut. I have an off cut of maple that should be a good size to get two scoops out of if I do them back to back. I think this will look particularly amazing in walnut, but as it’s a more expensive wood, I will practice with the maple off cut first.

Ok, I’m off to get carving, watch this space…
